Every trope from every heist story you’ve ever heard is here and it’s a bore. Of course, there’s no book without the heist, but everything that comes after is so much less interesting than getting there. Things take a turn for the worse, though, once Jazz starts the heist. She’s also an underdog she may live on the Moon, but she’s got it tough, and that struggle is very human and relatable. She provides the reader with an on-the-ground perspective of Artemis as well as relating the facts and science behind it. Through all of that setup, Jazz is a welcome tour-guide. It feels almost like walking through a time-machine into the near future and it’s a blast. ![]() ![]() Every detail, from the laws, to the atmosphere, the economy, security, tourism – it’s all here, carefully spread across the first third of the story. Weir did a mind-numbing amount of research of how a city on the surface of the Moon could actually be possible, and any time he’s describing it, it’s utterly mesmerising. Jazz may be the star of Weir’s story but the star of the book is Artemis itself. She, of course, takes it, but suffice it to say things don’t go very well. Eventually, she’s given an opportunity to make a lot of money by pulling off a dangerous heist. The main character is Jazz, a slick, down-on-her-luck smuggler who grew up there. In the book, Artemis is the first city not built on Earth, but the moon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But as Jason, who played Brandon, clarified in real life Luke was not rolling up in his character's classic convertible Porsche. Anna's relationship with her brutal Aunt and how she completely shutters herself away did make the first part of the story hard to get into. Anna struggles to understand what is wrong with her as her magic is so weak and since she lost her parents due to magic, she is torn between learning more or choosing her Aunt's path. Taking place in contemporary London, Anna suffers under the guidance of her Aunt who believes magic is dangerous and must be bound away and not used. ![]() Threadneedle begins a new series full of teenage angst, magical discovery, secrets, lies, revenge and I am so glad I stuck with this tale. These are two educated middle-class professionals who are surrounded by caring friends and family. ![]() One was the way they started bonding during an "I'm so lonely" pity-party. Outside of this, a couple of things turned me off this relationship. More than once? Someone wants a woke sticker. Shay herself felt like an internet personality with her "oh shucks, I'm so millennial" quips, gasping at the racism around her that she had "no idea" about, and always apologizing for her whiteness. Jokes ripped from memes, constant pop culture references (Team Angel? Come ooonnn), none of it did much to convince me this was a relationship to become invested in. I know the parts where they're bickering on live radio were probably meant to seem a bit scripted, but their off-the-air chatter felt equally wooden. There was something about the dialogue and jokes here that reminded me of tumblr memes. Problem is, this supposedly funny romance was not that funny to me. I imagine if I'd been madly shipping them that it would have been all the more exciting. ![]() This part of the book was done well, but it was a shame that I never warmed to the main couple - Shay and Dominic - like I was supposed to. ![]() I'll give some credit where it's due: Solomon writes steamy sex scenes. ![]() The hype made me try this one, but I'm sorry to say The Ex Talk was just not my cup of tea. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Nam no nonumes volumus quaerendum, cu meis graeci audiam vis. Though skeptical at first, Sophie quickly believes him when he shows her the Lost Cities, lands inhabited by elves and other creatures from myth and fairy tales. When the boy finds her again, he introduces himself as Fitz, explaining that he's an elvin Telepath just like her. So, when she comes across a strange boy whose mind she can't read and who somehow knows this, she tries to run. She's too afraid to tell anyone, including her family, for fear of being turned into an experiment. While this might sound useful, it's caused Sophie no small amount of grief: she can't turn this ability off and her attempts to mitigate the constant background noise make her stick out. All of this, however, pales in comparison to the secret she's kept for years: she can hear the thoughts of others and has been able to ever since a traumatic brain injury when she was five. ![]() Even amongst family, she sticks out, being the only skinny blonde among chubby brunettes.
